Thomas Ballance was an amateur artist who produced some excellent work. An Irish Civil Servant by profession, who translated his love and enthusiasm for motor racing into art. His art started as a child in the 1920’s, continued through his adolescence where he studied at the National College of Art and carried through into the 1980’s, principally covering Irish Motor Racing.
Thomas Ballance’s work was regularly commissioned by magazines and he also produced art for the Leinster Motor Club. At least one his paintings (Jaguar) was used as the artwork for a book cover. The paintings were often given as club prizes and at a Sotheby sale in September 1998 there was an oil on canvas of Mike Hawthorn. It is believed that this was a presentation item.
