BARRY APPLEBY

1909 – 1996

Barry Appleby will be best remembered for his Gambols cartoon strip which appeared in the Daily Express newspaper from 1950 up to his death in 1996.  He was the son of an early Editor of The Autocar magazine and contributed drawings from 1930 to 1973.  In the early 1930’s he also worked for The Sports Car magazine. His humorous sketches illustrated 'Disconnected jottings' and 'The Scribes Jottings' pages in the Autocar magazine plus his work was used for headings. Via these sketches he developed the characters of George and Gaye Gambol who were to become a cartoon feature in the Daily Express. His early sketches and cartoons are sometimes just signed APP.
